The Community Wildfire Defense Grant (CWDG) aims to assist at-risk communities and Indian Tribes in planning for and mitigating wildfire risks. Authorized by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Public Law 117-58), the program supports projects that help communities in wildfire-prone areas develop or update Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs) and implement mitigation measures outlined in CWPPs less than 10 years old. Priority is given to communities with high wildfire hazard potential, those classified as low-income, or those recently impacted by severe disasters.

The program also aligns with the goals of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy, promoting resilient landscapes, fire-adapted communities, and effective wildfire responses. In addition, projects addressing underserved communities or advancing modern building codes may access reserved funding and other benefits. The CWDG funds the following types of activities:

Planning Projects: Development or revision of CWPPs, creation of wildfire components for hazard mitigation plans, and community planning efforts focused on zoning, building codes, and land use to reduce wildfire risks.

Mitigation and Preparedness Projects: Direct support for community wildfire mitigation leadership, training on best practices, and partnerships for mitigation efforts.

Prevention and Education Projects: Development of outreach and educational programs that promote wildfire safety practices, such as Firewise USA© and local fire safe councils.

Fuel Reduction and Ecosystem Restoration Projects: Activities to reduce hazardous fuels, such as thinning, pruning, and creating fuel breaks, with consideration for maintenance and sustainability.

Each project type requires a cost match (10–25%) and must include measurable deliverables to ensure success in mitigating wildfire risks.
